Self/Personal development should be an ongoing process of employment. Do not just rely on semi-annual or annual performance evaluations as a way to assess your work. You should be evaluating your own work on your own time to determine whether or not your job, or regular tasks align with your personal goals. If they do not align then do not worry, at least you have a sense of self-awareness that affords you the opportunity to differentiate between working a job just to make ends meet, and working towards achieving your own goals.
Your personal goals contribute to job satisfaction, and establish boundaries between your job and your personal life. Before you say that you don’t have any current goals please note that a lot of people have a tendency to state that they have not established any goals without realizing that many things that they strive for on a daily basis are in fact personal goals. A personal goal can be as simple as wanting to make it home in time to catch your favorite show every Tuesday, to being as complicated as having a desire to obtain a degree in an unrelated field but not knowing where to begin. By not establishing any goals you risk getting lost in your work. The lines become blurred, and you lose sight of your own needs.
You are a great employee. You are dedicated to getting your job done. Getting your job done means that you are helping your employer achieve their goal. Build their dream but don’t lose sight of your own dreams in the process.
Our Career Mapping Workshop will help you to define your career goals, identify personal goals that may be impacted by your line of work, and the best course of action to pursue a career that accommodates both goals.
