Your ability to maintain a positive outlook has a strong impact on your emotional well-being!
Have you ever talked yourself out of doing something crazy like smashing out your cheating boyfriend or girlfriend’s windows? What about walking off your job and never coming back? Or even just opting not to curse out your supervisor, mother-in-law, or some random old lady that cut in front of you in line even if you would have been well within your rights to do so? As angry and frustrated as you were in that moment, whether you thought about the possible consequences of your actions, rationalized with yourself, or determined that they just weren’t worth your energy, your thoughts shifted things.
That is because your thoughts are POWERFUL!
There are several benefits to starting each day with a positive mindset:
1. Increases your sense of optimism.
Your day maintains a momentum based off how it started. On those days where you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, the remainder of your day is more likely to be filled with subsequent negative experiences than any other “regular” day. Did you know that resting resets your mind (hence why I am always telling you to take a break when things start to feel overwhelming)? When you wake up each morning your mind is like a blank slate ready to face reality and process your experiences whether they’re good or bad. Since your mind is more receptive to the messages that it received when you first wake up, positive thoughts will help set the tone for your day, boost your sense of confidence, and aide in helping you to see the brighter side of things.
2. Prepares you to face any challenges.
How you handle your challenges, and setbacks when you’re in the “right” state of mind differs completely from how you handle them when you’re feeling “off”. Maintaining a positive outlook helps you to perform at your best. Entering a negative situation with positive vibes helps you to process things rationally rather than operate based off your emotions. And because misery loves company, when you’re in that “right” state of mind any attempt to suck you into a world of chaos will be unsuccessful.3. Motivation.
We’re our own worst critics. We tell ourselves that we aren’t as qualified as others or that we don’t look as pretty or handsome, or that we’re doomed to fail yet the world sees our beauty and our potential. Positive thoughts keep you motivated and confident in your ability to succeed. A simple “I’ve got this” has the power to take you to the top!
4. Stress reduction
Replaying negative situations or thoughts increases your stress levels. You start by thinking about the negative aspects of a situation. Next you start to worry about the what ifs even if they have no validity. Starting your day with positive thoughts trains your mind to maintain a positive outlook helps you to redirect your thoughts even if things may not be going so well. The more positive thoughts that you feed your mind, the less likely it is to fall into the habit of catastrophic thinking.
Maintaining a positive mindset when you feel plagued by negativity can present quite the challenge at first. With a lot of effort, and consistency you can reprogram your mind. If you’re unsure of how to get started, begin by focusing on one thing that you’re grateful for every morning.
